Drunken Man????
Drunken Noodles or Pad Kee Mao (which literally translates to “drunken man”) is a noodle dish commonly found at street vendors in Thailand and now in many restaurants around the globe. It is said it was a late night favorite of many a drunk person because of the rice noodles and salty sauce… helped to get them sober by morning perhaps? Since Drunken Man would sound ridiculous to order on a menu, Drunken Noodles was adopted somewhere along the way as a much more appetizing dish!! The first time I ordered this I was so excited thinking the noodles would be drunken (swimming) in some rich incredible sauce - when my order came I thought I ordered the wrong thing! This is a “pad” or fry - for the most part, if you see “pad” in the name, it will be a dry fry not a curry. But I was was wonderfully surprised by how amazing this combination of veg, and noodles was and the fact that there was this tasty char here and there that I didn’t even miss a curry sauce - in my opinion it doesn’t need it and would be a less-desirable dish if it had.
What makes this dish so special are the fresh wide-cut rice noodles that become wonderfully chewy and get a bit of a char on them - mixed with veggies, this is a satisfying and tasty delight. Our version will have baby corn, red bell peppers, and Chinese broccoli (a leafy cousin of the hybrid broccoli we see today), there’s a choice to add chicken as well.
Enjoy!!!!
